As a senior engineer within our advanced photonics team, you will take a leading role in the development, integration, and validation of bespoke laser systems and prototypes built around ultra-stable fibre-based architectures. Working in a multidisciplinary environment, you will collaborate closely with commercial, operations, supply chain, and manufacturing teams to ensure smooth transition from concept through to production.

You will take ownership of multiple customer-driven laser development projects, delivering reliable, production-ready solutions from initial requirements capture to final deployment.

The role

  • Engaging directly with customers to understand application requirements in quantum computing and quantum sensing
  • Translating complex application needs into highly specialised fibre-laser-based system designs
  • Designing and integrating subsystems for:
  • Light generation (seed sources, amplifiers, frequency stabilisation)
  • Light processing (frequency conversion, electro-optic and acousto-optic modulation, fibre-based filtering technologies, etc.)
  • Light delivery (advanced fibre platforms and integrated optical solutions)
  • Ensuring designs are robust, manufacturable, and scalable in line with long-term customer roadmaps
  • Contributing to the development of sophisticated control electronics, including analogue and digital communication architectures
  • Driving innovation within fibre-based photonics and contributing to intellectual property generation

Requirements

  • Several years of experience working with photonics in quantum computing and/or sensing applications (e.g., ion trapping, neutral atoms, photonic quantum systems, atom interferometry), in an industrial environment.
  • Proven experience converting quantum application requirements into laser system specifications.
  • Deep understanding of laser physics, optical amplification, nonlinear frequency conversion, laser stabilisation and metrology (e.g., frequency comb techniques), and integrated photonic technologies
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent engineering projects, with exposure to technical leadership or project management responsibilities
