Life Sciences recruitment has been highly volatile, particularly over the past year. In my recent conversations with senior stakeholders across the industry, one question keeps coming up: "Is now a good time to change jobs?"
This is a tricky question to answer because the job market has been challenging, especially for senior candidates. Over the past year, we've seen a scarcity of vacancies, with companies favoring lower-level, junior candidates. When senior positions do open up, the competition is fiercer than in previous years.
There's also a palpable sense of caution in decision-making from both clients and candidates. Companies are adopting more stringent hiring processes, leading to extended acceptance periods. Candidates, while attracted to the idea of job security, may find themselves reluctant to leave their current roles, missing out on the opportunity for career advancement, new challenges, improved compensation, and better work-life balance.
In addition to our ongoing client meetings, we've also gained valuable insights from the industry conferences we've attended recently. These events have provided a deeper understanding of the current landscape, with discussions centered around market trends, funding shifts, and talent needs in the Life Sciences sector. Networking with key players at these conferences has reaffirmed some of the challenges we’re seeing, but also highlighted areas of optimism. The conversations we’ve had on the ground have confirmed that companies are beginning to plan for growth again, indicating that the recent positive movements in funding and project restarts are translating into real opportunities for both candidates and employers.
That said, there are positive signs. Barrington James has noticed some encouraging shifts recently that could signal a rebound in the market:
- A significant increase in seed and Series A funding within the last 8 weeks
- Over 300 new roles coming through in the past 4 weeks
- Several projects that were previously on hold have resumed with confidence
So, if you've been considering a change, this could be the moment to explore new opportunities. Let’s talk more about your options—feel free to book a time with me through my Calendly link here: https://calendly.com/mbulley-barringtonjames
